Take it slow is ultimately a song about depression. Specifically when it reached its worst and the journey back from that through therapy sessions which helped him to unlock parts of the past you hold onto negatively.
The line “Even though i’m getting better i’m still told to take it slow” refers to the constant steps in the right direction but also the acknowledgement of the speed at which its necessary to take those steps and ultimately the distance yet to go. The bridge is about still having bad days amongst the good.
lyrics
Gather round, old familiar
The portly stains of twelve years today
It seems the same, my shelves are failing
A cowards way to begin your day
Even though i’m getting better
I’m still told to take it slow.
So I take it slow
I take it slow
Even though i’m getting better
I’m still told to take it slow.
Tighten the purse strings its healthy living
To mind you mind, enrich your soul
I say I love you, you have to know
This years been hellish, its time to grow
I try to journal, impossible
I hide the truth, its unstoppable
Even though i’m getting better
I’m still told to take it slow.
Even though i’m getting better
I’m still told to take it slow.
So I take it slow
I take it slow
Even though i’m getting better
I’m still told to take it slow.
The rain is heavier today I think
The light gets brighter as you look at it
You say that I should take a break for me
And you, you tell me to take it slow
I take it slow
I take it slow
I take it slow
I take it slow
I take it slow
I take it slow
I take it slow
I take it slow.
